Big Burning Objects!
Yes, you can build an art project and then…. burn it down! Many burns will have at least two of these artworks, referred to as the Effigy and the Temple.
Typically the burning of the Effigy feels like a big celebration. There can be performances around or on the artwork prior to burning it. Once the burning structure is safe to approach people like to dance around it and celebrate, often dancing naked (this is not mandatory). Everyone is encouraged to celebrate the present moment however they feel comfortable ensuring they don’t negatively impact others’ experience.
The burning of the Temple is a more internal, personal ritual.
Reflection, remembrance and release. Prior to burning, people may leave notes or objects inside the artwork they wish to let go of, or honour. Burning the temple often symbolises a process of letting go to make space for what comes next.
This particular burn is often done in silence, feeling like a coming together of the community to hold one another as we move through life’s challenges.
Da Rules
You can’t just burn stuff down willy-nilly! There are specific guidelines put together from previous burns with the fire danger and structural danger aspects in mind. There’s always a fire team standing by who will help to keep a safe perimeter, and ideally a burning artwork collapses without falling outside this area.

Building the temple or effigy is a big job- requiring time commitment before the burn in order to construct, maintenance during the weekend, and a plan about how things are going to burn down nicely. Each structure usually takes a team to put together, so don’t feel like you need to do it alone!

Even as an effigy or temple builder, you must purchase a ticket to Auroraburn. Ticket costs cannot be included in the proposed project budget.
Applications for Temple and Effigy will be reviewed by a small selection panel and assessed based on their feasibility, sustainability, creativity, and level of interactiveness for participants
